When the nasal lining is congested and the tube can't open fluid collects in the middle ear giving rise to 'cracking'. Sometimes it causes muffled hearing and tinnitus. Try a decongestant or an antihistamine. Take your pharmacist's advice as some antihistamines make people drowsy. Normally it is caused by a viral infection and will clear up given time.
