Quit smoking pot. Now. It's wasting your money and taking you nowhere, and the risks outweigh the enjoyment. The investigation for Secret is pretty extensive. They interviewed people that I supplied as references, and people who knew people who knew my wife. I spoke with some of the interviewees, and the questions they asked were pretty in depth. They also investigated my father deeply, as he was born in Malta. Additionally, they investigated my wife. The investigation for my TS was even more extensive, I'm quite sure. After all, this is National security we're talking about. You have no secrets that will not be revealed. If there is anything in your history that is derogatory, it will be discovered, especially if it were public record. Bottom line, if there's anything that can be held over your head, where full public disclosure may cause embarrassment, it will be used against you. Good luck.

Bottom line, if there’s anything which can be hold over your head, where full open avowal might means embarrassment, it will be used opposite you.

The work was top secret and very sensitive. His son belonged to some groups in college that protested environmental issues. That association almost cost the FIL his security clearance. Today, associations with people of interest or committing illegal acts puts you on the suspect list. These things can put you in a situation where security can be breached. Let's face it after 9/11, we live in a quasi free state. Our rights are abridged every day in the name of national security. I don't think you will pass the test unless you have exceptional skills that the army needs right now.

If you are drug free, don't mention past usage. You will have to list several references, and they will be contacted in person while you are in Basic Training. Unless your association with "outspoken Communists" is public record, choose your references with care. I had a TS clearance in the Army and for a job afterwards. I had anarchists as friends, did drugs in high school and was never asked about that. Granted that was over 30 years ago.
